November 23rd saw the presentation of the annual “Spelmaņu nakts” (Players’ night) national theatrical awards at the Dailes Theatre in Rīga.

In all, the winners in 17 different categories were named.

The largest number of awards – three – went to the Dirty Deal Teatro production “Alfas”, which won the award for small-form performance of the year, its director Valters Sīlis was recognized as the director of the year, and composer Edgars Raginskis received the award in the category “New work of the year in music or musical design”.

The jury also recognized the Daile Theatre’s “Držiņ savu arklu pār mirušo kauliem” (based on Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plough Over The Bones Of the Dead) as the large-form performance of the year.

As usual, the awards ceremony itself was quite a performance and extended over two and a half hours. If you’d like to watch the whole thing, you can do so via the video link below.
