Romanian authorities said today that there were two new drone incursions into the country’s national airspace and that several fighter jets were deployed, following a night of major Russian airstrikes in neighboring Ukraine.
The first drone “crossed national airspace” from Valkovo in Ukraine towards the Ciliea Veca area in Tulcea county in southeastern Romania, the Defense Ministry said, adding that “two German Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft were dispatched from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base to monitor the situation” at around 6:30 this morning.
Two more fighter jets took off about 20 minutes later from Borșa Air Base, and a second drone incursion was detected by radar systems in Romanian airspace in the Galați region, the ministry added, specifying that it was monitoring the situation.
Neighboring Moldova also reported the incursion of a Shahed drone into its territory early this morning, according to a statement from the border police.
“The drone was spotted heading towards Vinogradovac-Vulcanesti, and then towards the border with Romania,” which it crossed, the border police said, adding that they immediately informed the Romanian side.
Last week, Romania mobilized four fighter jets due to a drone incursion.
