Hi! I’m an international student living in Poznań and I’ve been here for about a year. I take this bus route every day from Student Depot to PUMS and back. I usually stand at the back of the bus in the spot shown in the picture. I always thought it was allowed because I see locals stand there every day.

    But today something strange happened.

When I was going back from university, the bus was practically empty. I went to the back with my friends and stood in the same place as always (behind the yellow line, leaning on the pole) at the end of the bus. We were there for the entire ride, around 7 stops.

Just before the stop near my dorm, the driver suddenly said something in Polish through the speaker. I didn’t react because I don’t understand Polish yet, and the local lady sitting nearby didn’t react either. I was 90% sure I wasn’t on the yellow line, because my back was literally on the pole, the same way I always stand.

Then the driver started driving very aggressively, and when we got off she came out and yelled at us:
“Do you not understand Polish? I told you to stand away from the door!”

I was really confused because I’ve been standing there every day for a year and I always see locals stand there too. So I’m wondering:
    • Is there a rule that you cannot stand in that spot?
    • Did I actually do something wrong?
    • Has anyone else experienced something like this in Poznań buses?
    • Is this normal or just a strict driver having a bad day?

I’m not angry, just confused and want to understand if I made a mistake.
    Thanks in advance!

The doors have proximity sensor. Maybe u stood on its Path and prevented the doors closure. Stuff happens.

    2. Maybe she saw that something was wrong with the door and realized it was dangerous to stand so close, or she had a bad day, and you were chosen by “That Sucks” committee as a victim of it. I don’t know how it is in Poznań, but in my city bus drivers are known to be unhelpful and unpleasant.

Oh and when u stand on the doorway in long busses u obstruct the drivers vision on the other doorways further away behind u. So the driver got pissed. Kids tend to do that all the time cuz they do not know that. Gotta watch out and react accordingly.

My Polish is lacking, but I understand the language “Angry” and the word “drzwi” (door). I’d be moving somewhere else no matter if it looked like they were talking to me or not.

I dont know how popular is this but if the bus is almost empty and there are no people at the bus stop, the driver checks if there are people standind by the exit, if not they don’t stop, at least i noticed this where I live

    6. If you have problems, then you say in english: “I’m very sorry, i don’t understand polish, do you speak english”?

Is it a problem for you?

    7. Can’t imagine, that someone is yelling at me for standing in a “legal” spot in a bus…
      Yell him back next time!

    8. When bus is full many Polish people even lean on a door and nobody makes a problem out of it. She was probably xenophobic but used yellow line/door thing or whatever was that to shout on you and have her ass covered, because she had “valid” reason. That sometimes happen, Im sure she would be much patient to a Polish person. Im sorry this happened to you.

    9. Stupid poznańskie buses. I’m łódź if you stand in wrong place you just get hit with the doors.

    10. This spot with yellow line seems to be (I’m no 100% sure from the photo) motorized ramp for diabled people. Probably driver asked in polish „Proszę odsunąć się od drzwi” (thus you heard „kosze”) because she wanted to extend this ramp for person riding a wheelchair.

    11. I don’t know how true it is but once I got told by the buss driver to not stand on the yellow areas one the ground. I my case it was close to the doors next to the driver. I suppose you shouldn’t stand on the yellow areas as it’s too close to the doors. Maybe it’s similar in your case

In Poznań public transit there’s often announcements said that tell you to move to the inner part of the vehicle, as in away from the doors so you don’t block the entrance. This could be one of the reasons.

    13. Without knowing what he said it will be hard to say. Drivers almost never say anything, if anything they might say that the bus broke down, happened like 2 in 10 years.
