STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Logistics are in their final stages as Youngstown State University is set to acquire the Eastern Gateway Community College campus in Steubenville.

The Jefferson County Commission has completed the necessary steps for the transition, with the deed now transferred to YSU’s timeline.

“Our big goal was to have education remain in this county and in that building and that’s what happened,” Jefferson County Commissioner Eric Timmons said.

YSU President Bill Johnson outlined the educational offerings that will be available at the new facility.

“It’s a full community college — certificates, credentials, badges, associate degrees, bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees right here in Steubenville,” Johnson said.

The commission is optimistic that the acquisition will spur further economic development in the area.

“I envision that whole strip all the way down John Scott to be booming. I think if we get one place in there, it’s just going to a chain reaction. And I think it’s a win-win for the county,” Timmons said.

The transition is expected to be swift, with the campus becoming one of YSU’s facilities shortly after the start of the new year.
