Are people surprised by this, or more or less according to expectation?
Obviously this is number one as a percentage.

Is this because we’re a super desirable place to live? So we should be proud of this.

  1. Switzerland has also one of the most annoying naturalisation process that often leads to 2nd if not 3rd generation to not take the passport. Once you have a C permit, you’re as good as you can and don’t necessarily feel the need to pay the thousand it takes.

We even have an umbrella term: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondo

A good quarter of our foreign population is born here. So if you remove 7-8% we are between Ireland and Canada.

  2. The reason for this score is because it is MUCH more difficult to naturalize and get the Swiss passport compared to other countries in Europe.

Not at all surprised. If you have that many foreigners, of course you notice that. There are hardly any Swiss with twi Swiss parents who also had two Swiss parents each. That is a rarity.

This looks like percentage born abroad, not foreigners. In which case it’s not down to the naturalisation process.

And a third of those are Italian, French or German so it’s not like they’ve come far really. Quite different to Australia.

  5. Maybe it is the number 1 in LEGAL migration. I am sure other countries dont even report refugees or illegals as actual migration

“as a percentage of the population”

If my country has 2 people, and 1 more person comes in, that’s a 50% growth.

If you have a small population, any number of people coming in will be more than other countries AS A PERCENTAGE.

Also how many of them are French, German, Italian…

  7. In Zürich there are like 50% immigrants, but they also pay 80% of the taxes. Switzerland has been really successful attracting high output immigrants.

  8. Important to point out that the majority of migrants in Switzerland are from neighbouring countries and vast majority from Europe.
Which is particular case reality from almost the others country in that list that have migrants with very different cultural backgrounds.

  9. Well of course. Life is so expensive here and having children even more so, the governmental support for families compared to EU countries is non-existant. So of course childbirth rates declined for decades and someone needs to work: immigrants. And then Switzerland government is all surprised pikachu face when health insurance premiums go up every year, because there are more and more old people that need health support. Tl;dr: swiss people fuck but only with contraception cuz having kids is expensive

The number in Spain is significantly higher because people from Hispanicamerica, portugal and other few countries/cases can request the nationality after just a couple of years. But we are fine with that

  11. Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand have a high percentage of skilled immigrants as they have very strict rules. Their economies benefit from the “brain-drain”, while european countries have a lot of welfare immigration.
Being in the top 3 isn’t bad in that context.

How do these people find a job in switzerland from abroad? Ive been applying nonstop for 2.5 years and got a total of 2 interviews and 0 offers.

  13. Maybe if you didn’t have a low sperm count and weren’t crap at pulling someone of the opposite sex, there would be more kids to not warrant this?

  14. Given different naturalization policies, a more meaningful comparison might be to look at immigration over the past 2,3 or 5 years as percentage of total.
