Bosnia and Herzegovina opened its World Cup qualifying campaign with a loss. The team coached by Croatian strategist Dario Gjergja fell on the road to favored Turkey, 93–71. Serbia began its new qualifying cycle successfully, though not without significant difficulty. At the “Aleksandar Nikolic” Hall in Belgrade, in the opening round of World Cup qualifying, Serbia defeated Switzerland 90–86 after a dramatic second-half comeback. Switzerland went into halftime with a stunning 23-point lead, but the Serbian team under new head coach Dusan Alimpijevic refused to fold, delivering an almost flawless second half in which they erased the deficit and eventually pulled ahead.
Still, the game left plenty of questions about the current quality of Serbia’s roster. Even acknowledging that top national teams often deal with missing stars during qualifying windows, few could have expected Switzerland to build such a margin in Belgrade. Serbia’s players looked lost defensively and disjointed on offense, while the visitors were nearly unstoppable—11-of-15 from two and 9-of-11 from deep. But from the start of the second half, Serbia turned up the defensive pressure, and the offensive confidence grew with each possession. There were still mistakes—late fouls, rushed shots—but the energy level was extremely high, and the Swiss lead kept shrinking. Stefan Miljenovic delivered a standout performance with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists, but the hero of the comeback was captain Dusan Ristic, who hit several crucial threes on his way to 24 points. Nikola Tanaskovic, Stefan Momirov and Balsa Koprivica also played important roles. For the upcoming matchup with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dusan Alimpijevic’s team will be bolstered by two experienced EuroLeague players, Nemanja Dangubic and Ognjen Dobric. Still, Serbia is missing a huge pool of top-tier talent in this qualifying window, making Dusan Alimpijevic’s job both difficult and unforgiving.
