Is cricket getting more eye balls than ever in Italy?

Because although cricket is less competitive than football , still making into top 20 means beating a few experienced team for sure.

I am just curious as an non-italian to know what they think about cricket and their national team and will you guys follow this ?

  1. the post is about qualifications of italian mens cricket into 20 teams of t20 world cup of cricket. I just wanted to make a thread in this sub about opinion of Italians on cricket in general , qualifications of their team and whether will they start following, now that their national team has given their best performance.

    thanks you

  2. Honestly I never watched cricket and tbf it’s not a widespread sport in Italy, so I think that even if Italy succeeds, it won’t change much and ordinary people won’t even notice it.

It’s extremely popular in the Bangladeshi and Indian communities. I never knew there were enough dedicated Italians playing it to be competitive in the world stage huh.

I think that in Italy, apart from those six people who practice it, perhaps the only ones who know that it is not played on horseback are those originally from India Bngladesh and Pakistan.

  5. I readed the news a couple of weeks ago or so. Nonetheless we don’t give a damn about cricket in Italy, players aren’t even Italian in fact. I think cricket is one of the most boring sports around; curling is way more interesting for example

  6. hmmm, I’m not sure about that. I’ve never seen cricket mentioned anywhere by anyone, just saw the news of the qualification but it was a first.

Dont really know the sport much apart knowing is a traditional british sport that looks like baseball (sort of? Not super sure about the rules tbh). Looking at the team no one looks like being born in italy so my interest for the competition itself doesn’t really hit very high, not even for curiosity

Having lived in the home counties for a long time, I’ve watched it and casually played it on several occasions (semi decent batsman). I quite like it and it’s a fun day out, weather permitting, but at this stage there’s too much competition in Italy attention-wise for it to gain meaningful traction I’m afraid.

Let’s also remember that, just like with rugby up until 15/20 years ago, tier 1 countries are decades ahead of the rest of the world so I expect England and WI hammering Italy into oblivion at group stage.

It’s gaining popularity in cities like Brescia, Mantova, and Cremona due to immigration, but mostly in rural areas. Hopefully, the Italian cricket team will receive support from people in Italy if they succeed, rather than their already existing dislike for some sports.

Plus, many are fresh teams in the World Cup, so it’ll be fun to see if these teams can crack into the mainstream cricket in the coming years, like the US, Canada, and Italy.
