Last week I came home to this piece of yellow string hanging out of my mailbox. I removed it, and today someone put another piece of string there. No other mailboxes have this string. Does anyone know why and who has done this? I live in Zurich if this is helpful for context. I am not Swiss and that’s obvious from my name, and I have dealt with racism from people in the neighbourhood so my first thought was that this is some racial targeting.

  1. Could be a test from a thief. He watches and note the times when it gets removed to see when you are home and when its time to try his luck.

  2. I’d suspect a check for regular presence before anything else.
Change a thing the resident will definitely notice and correct, maybe a couple of times. The places that don’t correct the change are not being frequented and a potential target for a break-in.

I wouldn’t touch it barehand. Maybe your mailbox is being marked. This is according to AI: “A string found in a physical mailbox is most likely a tool used for **mail fishing**, a type of theft where thieves use a string and glue to pull letters and checks out of mailboxes. This is a common, though illegal, method of mail theft that exploits the accessibility of private mailboxe”

  4. Typical “burglar trap”.
Changes the form and location, but the tactics are the same. Usually they put in the door handle, but mailbox is also a good idea. If is not removed in days is a sign that nobody is at home.

I’ve once see thing kind of thing. I ignored and a neighbour house (apartment) was robbed when they were in vacation. They broke the door and stole money and jewellery. They also look for lights always off.

So be sure if your neighbour is at home. Inform him of that bizarre fact and that it might be flagged by criminals. Unfortunately this kind of things are no more farfetched said to me by VS canton Police.

  5. Seemingly unpopular opinion: there are quite a lot of more unsuspicious ways to check for the time when somebody isn’t home than a neon green thread hanging out your mailbox.. especially if you’re a semi profesional burglar. My first thought was that maybe somebody want to be able to fish something out of your mailbox for whatever reason.

Write on the mail box, “come in, there is a 7.5 and a person wanting a lot to be a hero behind the door waiting for you” and there shouldnt be any lace again
