The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre on Tuesday issued a weather alert for thick fog which is expected to appear Tuesday night into Wednesday.
A yellow alert (potential danger) covers western and central districts of the country with a more serious orange alert (danger) in the eastern part of the country, including all of Latgale and parts of north-east Vidzeme.
Across the country visibility will be reduced to 500-1,000 metres, but in the east of the country it will likely be restricted to 200-500 metres in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The warning is currently set to expire at 07:00 though obviously, predicting when the skies will clear is not a precise science.
Drivers are urged to proceed with caution and use their fog lights to ensure they are seen by other road users. Though the recently-formed ice has melted in many places, it may still be found in others – particularly shaded areas in forests on minor roads.
