I understand that domestic arthouse films are not for everyone, so I won’t say that everyone has to watch this film (I also understand why it would be too long and boring for some, although I don’t agree with them), but, as far as I’m concerned, this really seems to be tailored for me. It has everything: a bit of Gothic, a bit of neo-romanticism, a bit of romanticism, a bit of analysis of the position of women in rural Croatia at the beginning of the twentieth century, a bit of history of Croatian emigration, a bit of philosophical themes (monstrous Others, the nature of faith), a bit of Paradžanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, a bit of Robert Eggers, a bit of queerness, a bit of beautiful shots of the Dinaric karst, a bit of fucking acting, a bit of magical realism, a bit of psychological thriller. If you’re a fan of slower festival dramas, this is really worth watching. Don’t look at me drunk and If the house was good and a wolf would have it, they already held Hana Jušić high in my eyes, but God won’t help, he raised her above all measure. If it sounds like something you’d like, be sure to check it out.
