On the night of December 6, during Russia’s massive air assault on Ukraine, Czech helicopters joined the Polish Air Force’s preventive operation to defend its airspace. The aim of the operation was to strengthen the defense of NATO’s eastern border amid the threat.

Defense Minister Jana Černochová, who is stepping down, confirmed this. According to her, the threat ultimately did not materialize, and the helicopter unit returned to its base. In the morning, the Polish side thanked the Army of the Czech Republic and other NATO allies for their assistance.

It is noted that the operation was prompted by Russia’s massive air strike on Ukraine.

Context of the Event and Allies’ Involvement

As part of defense cooperation, the Czech Republic previously sent three Mi-171 helicopters to Poland to protect the eastern border, along with around one hundred Czech service members.

This coordination demonstrates the Allies’ readiness to respond to threats and support stability in the region within NATO.
