On the evening of November 24th, Latvian Radio broadcast a live concert in which this year’s artist-in-residence, saxophonist Aigars Raumanis presented a programme of music by French composers of the early 20th century.
The title of the programme is borrowed from Darius Milhaud’s opus for alto saxophone and large ensemble La création du monde. Alongside it is the virtuoso Chamber Concerto for saxophone and eleven instruments by Jacques Ibert.
Although these works tend to be in the repertoire of classical saxophonists and are very important in the process of learning to play the saxophone, they are not often heard in concerts.
Aigars’ reliable partner in the performance of these works is the State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga ensemble under the direction of conductor Normunds Šnē.
In a wonderful duet with pianist Herta Hansen, the French composer Paule Maurice’s imaginative miniature cycle Tableaux de Provence also gets a very welcome airing in Latvia. You can listen to the whole concert via the link below.
