The pinnacle of global excellence in tourism filmmaking was recently marked by the staging of the World Tourism Film Awards, which culminated its 37th edition in the historic Portuguese city of Guimarães. This celebrated international event, frequently described as The Festival of Festivals, represents the ultimate recognition within the sector for the world’s most impactful and innovative tourism videos. The selection of Portugal as the host nation for the very first time conferred a distinct prestige upon the occasion, signifying a major milestone for both the awards and the country’s growing profile on the international stage.
The prestigious ceremony served as the grand finale of the CIFFT Circuit, the world’s leading competition framework designed exclusively for tourism audiovisual productions. The meticulous organization of the event was handled through a significant collaboration involving the International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals (CIFFT), the Guimarães Municipality, and the respected regional entity, Tourism Porto & North of Portugal. The proceedings were conducted across two days, specifically on 4 and 5 December 2025, during which time the global community of tourism professionals, filmmakers, and creative agencies was brought together to acknowledge collective achievements and set the standard for future destination promotion. The significance of video as a strategic instrument for bolstering destinations was thus underscored throughout the two-day gathering.
The Historic Cradle Chosen as the Prestigious Venue
The decision to install the World Tourism Film Awards in Guimarães was a meticulously calculated one, reinforcing the city’s standing as a location of immense cultural and strategic relevance. Guimarães is historically known and widely celebrated as the “birthplace of Portugal,” a moniker that speaks volumes about its role in the foundation of the nation. Furthermore, the city’s historic center is rightfully listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing an unmatched backdrop of history, heritage, and architectural splendor for an event of this magnitude. This inherent historical weight and symbolic capital were deemed the ideal setting for an international event dedicated to celebrating the artistry of destination promotion.
The ceremonial proceedings and the official awards gala were magnificently hosted at the Teatro Jordão, a beautifully restored theatre structure dating back to the 1930s. The selection of this venue ensured that the grand finale was steeped in cultural significance and offered a sophisticated, welcoming environment for all international and national guests. The cultural, economic, and strategic opportunities presented by hosting the awards were duly emphasized by the local authorities.
The Grand Mechanics of the CIFFT Circuit
The structure of the competition is defined by the rigorous year-long process known as the CIFFT Circuit. This established global ranking system operates by aggregating results from various international tourism film festivals throughout the calendar year, thereby ensuring that only the truly exceptional productions reach the final stage. The World Tourism Film Awards functions as the culminating point, where the most accomplished entries are ultimately distinguished. An impressive volume of content is assessed annually; competition is routinely fierce, with approximately 4,000 promotional videos being submitted from over 50 countries globally. This wide-ranging participation ensures that the awards genuinely reflect the diversity and innovation present across the international tourism landscape.
International Gathering and Strategic Impact
The two-day event in Guimarães attracted a diverse and highly influential group of attendees from around the world. The guest list included key tourism professionals, leaders from creative and communication agencies, major production companies, filmmakers, destination marketers, and influential media representatives from dozens of countries, including those from Europe, the Americas, and North Africa. This congregation provided a unique platform for high-level networking, sharing crucial industry insights, and fostering collaborations that are vital for the advancement of global tourism promotion. The awards ceremony itself, held on 5 December, was the focal point, where the international community convened to offer recognition to the finest talents in audiovisual marketing.
Beyond the formal awards, the gathering was designed to inspire and facilitate industry growth. The focus was consistently placed on affirming the role of audiovisual content as a potent and indispensable strategic tool for the promotion of destinations, specific tourism products, and specialized services. The awards helped position Portugal, and especially the Northern region of the country, as a major benchmark in the realms of innovation, heritage preservation, and sustainable tourism practices. The success of the event was highlighted by Luís Pedro Martins, the President of Turismo Porto & Norte de Portugal, who stressed that the choice of the region, and specifically Guimarães, was the most appropriate decision, serving to significantly boost international visibility and appeal.
Highlighting Distinguished Achievements and Future Trajectory
The World Tourism Film Awards recognized 32 outstanding videos from 17 countries, marking them as the best in the world for the year. Specific, high-profile achievements were celebrated across the board. Notably, the Tourism Products category saw an impressive victory for the film Portugal’s Unwritten Recipe, securing first place for Turismo de Portugal. Furthermore, the Tourism Services category celebrated a shared top spot, which was awarded to NURI – The Secret of Nuri by Nuri Factory Tour, a Portuguese production, alongside Centro Danza Matadero by Madrid Destino from Spain. A significant distinction was also achieved by Montenegro, whose film Uncover Your Wild Side was placed second globally in the highly competitive Country Promotion category, affirming its status among the world’s leading destinations.
In addition to the main category prizes, special recognitions were distributed, including the Tourism Press Award and the GreenWorking Awards. These special accolades further cemented the event’s commitment to recognizing not only creative brilliance but also the crucial media role in destination promotion and the growing necessity of integrating sustainability into tourism practices.
