On December 8-9, 2025, a delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elnur Mammadov paid a visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
During the visit, the first political consultations were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Laos, co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elnur Mammadov and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Maytong Tammavongsa.
During the meeting, discussions were held on the current state of relations between the two countries, prospects for expanding and developing cooperation in political, economic, humanitarian and other areas.
Deputy Minister E. Mammadov provided the Laos side with detailed information on the current situation in the region, the process of mine clearance in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories, as well as restoration and construction work.
The meeting also discussed the prospects for cooperation between the two countries within international organizations, including the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which Laos is a member.
During the visit, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation held meetings with Vice President of the Lao National Assembly Sunthon Saynyachak and Lao Foreign Minister Songsavan Phomvihon.
Also, Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov gave an interview to influential Lao media organizations on the current state and development prospects of Azerbaijani-Laos relations.
At the official reception held on December 9, 2025, by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Vietnam, also accredited in Laos, in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, Deputy Minister Elnur Mammadov and Lao Foreign Minister Songsavan Phomvihon, who attended as an honorary guest, greeted the guests and delivered a comprehensive speech.
The event was also attended by members of the Azerbaijan-Laos Friendship Association, consisting of Laotians who had previously studied in Baku.
