I’ve been studying the history of the NOB for the last few days, so I marked the Croatian brigades by their place of origin. About 60 brigades were formed on the territory of today’s Croatia. Brigades that were disbanded at some point and later formed again are shown once. Markers drawn on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for example, show the location of the formation of the 1st and 2nd Dalmatian Brigades, in the area of the free territory around Livno and Bosanski Grahov.
The first brigade (1st Lika) was formed near Slunj in the summer of ’42. It is interesting to me that by the end of that year 18 brigades had been formed in Croatia – so before Stalingrad, before El-Alamein, before the Italian capitulation, before "knew" how the war will end. Of those 18, three are from Dalmatia, three from Banovina, 3 from Kordun, 4 from Lika, 4 from Slavonia, and 1 from Gorski Kotar.
I take the formation of brigades as an indicator of the intensity of the conflict in the mentioned regions and the engagement of the population in the fight. At the time of formation, the brigades have an average of about 1,000 fighters, with some having 560 and some 1,500.
Brigades are designed as mobile military units that, unlike detachments, can move over a wide area and operate far from their home location. For example, some Dalmatian brigades stayed in Bosnia and eastern Herzegovina until 1944.
At that time, the brigades were quite poorly armed, so much so that when the sources list the number of fighters, they always add how many of them were in possession of weapons, which is approximately between 50 and 70% of the brigade’s fighters. Weak equipment, lack of weapons, clothing, food and medicine supplies made the Partisan brigades very ineffective in fighting the better-supplied enemy. It was not until the summer of 1944, on Vis, that they received their first meaningful uniforms and modern weapons from the British army and were ready for more demanding actions and frontal skirmishes with the German army and its allies.

Procjena o naoružanju nije baš sasvim točna, ali da, naoružanja je 1942-43 nedostajalo. Stavljam pregled naoružanja par slabo naoružanih brigada s početka 1943. Reći međutim da je borbeni efekt partizanske brigade bio neefikasan bi bilo pogrešno. Brigade su za jedinice takvog tipa imale veliki broj boraca dok su dosta komore i drugih poslova preuzimale lokalne civilne organzacije NOO i SKOJ. Nekih 80 do 90% sastava brigada te čak i divizija je sudjlovalo direktno u borbama. Ali ovo znači da neke ozbiljnije operacije su moguće samo tamo gdje ih velik dio stanovnika podupire na razne načine. Nadalje, bili su jako koordinirani, sposobni izvesti napade usred noći na uporišta, koordinirati se bez radio veze, marširati velike udaljenosti, razbiti veliki broj statičkih osovinskih jedinica i nadmudriti operativne u manevrima. Tijekom Weiss I bilo je slučajeva da su partizani, iako puno slabije opremljeni, znali taktički okružiti njemačke bataljone u prodiranju. Nijemci su napredovali sporo a Talijani samo kad bi partizani napustili položaj jer su se i na drugom sektoru povukli zbog Nijemaca. Da ne spominjemo nekih 6 ili 7 ustaških bojni od kojih je ostala samo po jedna satnija tijekom stvaranja “Bihaćke republike” ili o tome kako su i iscrpljene brigade koje su preživjele Sutjesku uspjele uništiti 2 ustaška bataljona, 1 domobransku pukovniju i cijeli niz četničkih i zelenokadrovskih milicija istočno od Bosne, gdje prije nisu imali jako uporište.

Bog te jebo, rat je završio prije 80 godina. Čime se vi lijevi i desni majmuni opterećujete to je strašno.
Šta, za 50 godina će mi se unučad drkat oko Domovinskog rata? Očito hoće.
Kvadrat stana tri prosječne plaće. Vi tu gledate koje je polje šahovnice prvo, i brojite partizanske brigade.
Ljudi počeli opet kopati po kontejnerima, vi se zajebavate oko par klošara što se mole na trgu.
I onda kad ja dečku na pitanje o Njemačkoj kažem da se odseli i ne gleda natrag, opet me svi iznapadaju. Poremećeno. Prokleto poremećeno.
