Local chamber leaders and small business owners launched the Buy the Basin campaign, highlighting how shopping locally strengthens the Permian Basin economy
ODESSA, Texas — For small business owner Maci Holguin, 2025 hasn’t gone how she hoped. She says rising living costs have caused prices across El Rancho Boots to go up. And with big-box stores offering similar products at lower rates, her sales have been affected.
“We try hard to keep our prices good for everyone, but it’s hard when you’re a local business owner,” said Holguin.
But help may soon be on the way.
Today, both the Midland and Odessa Chamber of Commerce announced the return of Buy the Basin. It’s an effort encouraging residents to increase local spending, which could lead to growth in retail sales, jobs, and tax receipts to local entities.
Odessa Chamber of Commerce President Renee Earls says it’s important to buy local. She says even a few cents could have a ripple effect on the Basin’s economy.
“When you buy local, you’re supporting that local business owner, you’re supporting their employees, you’re supporting their families, and we’re keeping jobs in the Basin,” said Earls. “So, it’s more important than ever to Buy the Basin.”
According to the Perryman Group, local spending rising to levels seen in other regions would result in a nearly $2 billion gross product increase and almost 20,000 added jobs.
Holguin believes the Buy the Basin campaign will not only benefit her family, but El Rancho Boots’ 15 employees and the charities the business donates to.
“We’re very happy,” said Holguin. “It helps let people know who we are and why you should shop with us.”
As we continue through the season of giving, city officials stress to keep your spending local to give a holiday boost to the Basin’s economy
