North Macedonia, Demir Kapija: A 44 MW wind farm has entered trial operation in the municipality of Demir Kapija, according to the Energy Regulatory Commission of North Macedonia. The facility is part of the Dren wind farm developed by Turkish investor Kaltun Enerji, with construction carried out by YEO Technology. It is the country’s third operational wind power plant, while another nearby project is close to commissioning.
The regulator said that North Macedonia added 210 MW of renewable capacity to the grid through November, including the 44 MW from the Dren project. The remaining additions came from solar power. With installed photovoltaic capacity reaching 848 MW at the end of 2024, total solar capacity has now exceeded 1 GW. Renewables accounted for 55% of production capacity last year and generated 40% of domestic electricity.
Kaltun Enerji received licenses for the trial operation of two sections of the Dren project, Dren 1 with 33.6 MW and Dren 2 with 9.6 MW. The installations use seven and two 4.8 MW turbines supplied by Goldwind. The wind farm area extends across parts of the Demir Kapija, Negotino, and Gevgelija municipalities. North Macedonia’s first wind farm, Bogdanci, is located nearby.
Separately, the Rosoman wind farm developed by Park na veterni elektrani Perun received a temporary production license earlier this year and is expected to be commissioned soon. It is equipped with turbines from Siemens Gamesa. Another large project, the 400 MW Å tip wind farm by Alcazar Energy Partners, broke ground in July.
The regulator also reported progress in licensing solar plants with battery storage and does not expect electricity surpluses this winter due to rising household consumption.
