When I was in hospital I saw them neglect an elderly man on the ward who would beg for help. Nurses would walk past ignoring him. He was frail and according to the board next to his bed, he was registered blind.

Yeah, if staff start ignoring you start taking names and just let them know your sending them to a family member so they know who to report to the news / law if something happens to you. 🙂 That tends to get shit moving.

Such an awful way to go and so preventable too, on his first call about pain that long they should’ve helped him sort out a blood test wherever would be fasted and *fast tracked* it.
I wonder if appendicitis is often missed, or forgotten. Don’t often hear about it, probably because usually people somehow catch it before it goes bad. It took me sicking up bile and being unable to walk due to debilitating pain from it actually rupturing for my local GP to bother taking it seriously. They first claimed my pain was a UTI smh. But I was lucky and when they *bothered* to check they did get my blood work done fast. It could’ve been done for him too.
Thoughts are with his family and friends, what a terrible thing to happen.

Appendicitis is common enough, you would think they would have sorted this out pretty quick?

Not an uncommon story… It took Adenbrookes Hospital 4 days to Diagnose an apeddicitis. (a family member)
GP – Day 1 – I think its appendicitis, but here are anti-biotics and if the pain is worse, go to A+E
A+E – Day 2 – get to A+E – Consultant says Its trapped wind (Nurses say appendix) – go home
A+E – Day 3 – Back… Consultant says ‘Its a big sh1t’ – Jnr Docs and Nurses say appendix – go home
A+E – Day 4 – Back .. Consultant says ‘Womens troubles’ – Jnr Docs and Norses say appendix – go home
A+E – Day 5 – Back.. Consultant oders Ultrasound – OH #### ITS APPEDICITIS! Surgery 2hrs later.
2 Days later, she went home.

I read this, and man does it ever look damning. Blood tests missed, lack of urgency from urgent care services, and nothing happening despite the patient repeatedly coming back when told “come back if the pain gets worse”.
You’d think they’d be tipped off somewhere between the septic signs and the peeing blood thing, but somehow still only gets relevant care after his heart stops.

What a series of fuckups.
When I had appendicitis I first rang 111 – but by the time I’d heard back from a nurse the excruciating pain had stopped so the advice was just see your GP the next day. I did that, and the pain had gradually worsened during the day. I remember the GP’s sceptical look when I said “I think it’s appendicitis” but after going through the history and the symptoms he said he agreed and he was calling the surgical ward at the hospital and getting me a bed. Next morning I had it removed – it had yet to burst and was just inflamed.
I think specifically stating I thought it was appendicitis may have helped. By the time I saw the GP the pain had localised in that classic appendix area.

I live in China and had appendicitis 6 weeks ago. Had a dull worsening pain all morning. Was at the gym when it spiked and by the time I made it home all I could do was curl up in a ball on the couch I couldn’t even speak. My wife called an ambulance which arrived 5 mins later. 10 mins after that I was in A&E. I had a CT scan immediately and within 10 minutes I was told it was appendicitis and I would have surgery later that day because I’d been eating and drinking they had to wait. Instead I opted for anti biotic and a private hospital the following day as they said there would be no assistants to carry me at 10pm when the operation was scheduled so my wife would have to do it. Had the operation the next day no problem.
