Poland will hand over its remaining MiG-29 combat jets to Ukraine in exchange for new missile and drone technology, according to the Polish general staff, which described the move as a “donation.”

The handover of the jets – thought to number just under a dozen – is “part of the policy of the alliance in support of Ukraine and to maintain security on NATO’s eastern flank,” the general staff said on Tuesday evening.

Poland is replacing its Soviet-era MiGs with F-16s from the United States and South Korean FA-50s.

Talks on Ukrainian missile and drone technology were ongoing, the general staff said, with the main aim “the acquisition and joint development of new defence and industrial competences.”

Poland sent 10 MiG-29s to Ukraine in 2023. The transfer of the remaining jets has been planned since then.

Ukraine’s air force now has several dozen MiG-29s, which make up the largest component of its aircraft. It is currently taking delivery of F-16s and French Mirages.
