It looks like nothing will come of the re-election for the Split City Council – HDZ buys Matijević, the left coalition tacitly accepts it again.

After what failed rebalancing of the Split budget almost a month ago, Matijević (from the left coalition exSDP-Direkt-Možemo) is the same day announced that he would support him next time if the Government decides to donate Hotel Zagreb to the city of Split for the purpose of building a home for retirees.

I will quote him:

The colleagues who make up the opposition bloc are absolutely right, the budget review is a political document. At the moment, I don’t see any reason why I would raise my hand and support the rebalancing.

This city government does not have 16 hands, if I didn’t miss anything, which means that the rebalancing will not pass, and probably neither will the budget for a month. As someone who was a member of the SDP for 17 years, I cannot support the HDZ mayor’s budget, it would mean political suicide and no amendment can correct that.

I am between two bad choices: on the one hand, the choice to support the majority to which I absolutely do not belong, or to provoke new elections. Today I offer you a transparent offer, without any agreements behind closed doors – if the Government of the Republic of Croatia gives the entire hotel area to the City of Split as a gift "Zagreb" to the budget to make it a retirement home, I will support the budget.

If they don’t do that, I’m returning my mandate to the SDP, so let them decide how and what to do, but without me, because I don’t want to take part in the skirmishes anymore.

So, our good apartment grabber first says that he cannot support HDZ’s budget because that would mean political suicide, and then after a few seconds he blurts out something that is in complete contradiction to the previous sentence – that he will still support him if they provide a hotel for pensioners.

Some remember the drama on the eve of the election, when it was revealed that Matijević is a well-known apartment thief (he was thinking of screwing the elderly by entering into a lifetime maintenance contract, whereby after death all the property of those elderly would go to him) and that he is a quiet member of the HDZ.

Hardly anyone believed in the above. After the election, at the constituent session, it happened (in my opinion, as expected) that it was the same one Matijević gave his hand to the HDZ through a secret ballot. Then he and his girlfriend left the SDP knowing that they would throw them out. However, Matijević and his party left the SDP, but the left coalition (with Direkt and Mozemo) continued to exist, despite all previous events.

Now we have the case that Matijević openly announced the possibility of raising his hand for HDZ if they accept his proposal. HDZ accepted today. Judging by all this, do you know what will happen at the next session? Just like before, Matijević will raise his hand, his partners from Direkt and Mošeč will not. and the coalition will continue to exist.
