I had no idea the true size of Australia, and I live here.

This reminds me of a story I heard the head of Rolls Royce PR tell eons ago. Apparently some Australian couple bought a Phantom, rigged it up with a bunch of extra gas cans, and fully sent it all the way across the Outback just for fun.

Seeing the scale of the Outback makes that story a lot more impressive.

  2. This is why Perth makes no sense to me as a person from the US. Perth is like if the US were only populated on the East Coast and then Los Angeles was out there doing its own thing.

  3. I’m from the US and have traveled the whole country, when I saw how big Australia was compared to the US the first, it blew my mind too. Really puts Russia into perspective as well.

Friendly reminder that Australia and New Zealand combined are smaller than Brazil by both area and population

I mean, the journey Nemo took was at least from DC to Miami, and could have been twice as long depending on which part of the Great Barrier Reef he lived on

  6. So I’m from America but I lived in Australia for about 12 years and I got my citizenship there. I used to have family from the US wanting to come to Australia for a visit and literally every time when I asked for how long and what they want to do. They always said “I want to see Sydney and Melbourne and Uluru…and I want to dive in the Great Barrier Reef and I got this awesome wine from McLarenvale so I want to visit there too…oh and speaking of wines I want to go to Hunter valley too.”

Okay so you want to spend 6 months here…SMH

  7. it is why people always laugh at comments about the size of Texas and driving through it and mention Western Australia.

Isn’t most of the population density pretty confined to the edges of Australia? I’m from Wisconsin and have only watched documentaries, but isn’t most of the middle pretty barren?

  9. Hmm interesting…in that case the longest drive I’ve ever done is equivalent of Brisbane to Perth in a straight line. That wouldn’t be a realistic drive in Australia because of how gnarly the center of the continent is right?

  10. Had someone from Texas trying to tell me how big the state was, as a queenslander I replied that Texas is cute compared to qld, their face when they checked was amazing, it was like seeing their whole world view fall apart
