The weather in Latvia will become colder, and there will be light snowfall over the weekend, according to forecasts.
Already on Friday night, the temperature will drop sharply, and on Saturday morning it will range from -5 degrees in the east of the country to zero on the coast of Kurzeme. During the day, the temperature in most of Latvia will be -3 to 0Â degrees, and in western Kurzeme it will be +1 to +3 degrees.
On Saturday morning and early afternoon, the sun will shine in many places, but in the late afternoon and evening, a precipitation zone will begin to cross Latvia from the west, bringing snow and sleet, and rain in western Kurzeme.
Overnight into Sunday, it will snow throughout Latvia, with rain also expected in Kurzeme. In many places, the ground will be covered with white or a thin layer of snow will form. Current forecasts show that early Sunday morning, the heaviest snowfall will be in the central part of the country, with 2-4 centimetres in Zemgale.
Roads will be slippery in many places over the weekend.
Next week, unusually warm weather for December will return to Latvia, with daytime air temperatures mostly ranging from +2 to +7 degrees Celsius.
At night, temperatures will occasionally be around zero and slightly below, so roads will often be icy.
Most likely, temperatures in Latvia will remain above zero during Christmas.
From December 1 to 11, the average temperature in Latvia was 3.8 degrees, while the climatic norm for this period is -0.2 degrees. This will most likely be the warmest December in at least six years and one of the warmest in meteorological history, but the 2016 record, when the average temperature for the entire month was 4.3 degrees, is unlikely to be broken.
