Hi everyone,

I’m looking for help identifying a bright object observed on Thursday at 21:07 (local time GMT+1 / 20:07 UTC) over Agadez, Niger. Some people reported seeing it also in southern Libya, which makes me think it was a phenomenon visible from a long distance (atmospheric re-entry?).

Description:

Appearance: very bright, large, with multiple fragments/trails (it looks like a space debris re-entry, possibly a rocket stage, but I’m not sure).

Direction: the trajectory appeared to be heading toward the northeast.

What I have:

Several videos https://streamable.com/h4ou9j

Observation location: Agadez (I can provide a more precise location if useful).

Questions:

Does this look more like a fireball (meteor) or an atmospheric re-entry of space debris?

Are there any sources/trackers that can help identify which object might have re-entered at that time?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  1. Bolide. They’re usually space rocks that take a bit longer to burn up bc they’re a bit bigger.

Leading with “UFO” is unnecessarily sensationalist.

  2. That’s definitely space debris re-entering the atmosphere. It’s moving far too slowly to be a meteor.
