The Kosovo Parliament, with 106 votes in favor and one abstention, on December 14, 2018, approved three laws that change the mandate of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) to the Kosovo Army, but without changing its name.

The laws that were approved were the Draft Law for the Ministry of Defense, the Draft Law for the Kosovo Security Force and the Draft Law for service in the Kosovo Security Force. Amendments to the laws were voted on one by one.

Serbian MPs in the Parliament of Kosovo did not participate in the session. They have opposed the formation of the Kosovo Army.

The leaders of Kosovo’s institutions described the voting and approval of the laws on the army as “a historic day and one of the most important decisions since Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008.” /kp/
