On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the official signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stressed that the accord “closed one of the darkest chapters in Europe and secured a peace that has lasted to this day.”
In a joint statement, they noted that three decades on, Bosnia and Herzegovina still faces unresolved challenges rooted in the past.
“Although this year has brought political obstacles, the country has remained resilient. Staying on course toward European Union membership as a united and sovereign state in a stable and secure region must remain the ultimate goal,” Kallas and Kos said.
They underlined that all political leaders should focus their efforts on the necessary reforms to enable progress. The statement also emphasized that the European Union stands ready to ensure peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting the indispensable role of the EU’s military mission, EUFOR Althea.
“Thirty years after Dayton, Bosnia and Herzegovina must seize the opportunity to shape its future within the European Union,” the statement added.
