In just a few months, a series of sexual assault cases involving French children in after-school settings has heightened concerns about the sector, which welcomes millions of children under 13 every day. Paris, which organizes activities for more children than any other French city, has had several dozen reported cases, making it the most striking example. Nineteen after-school staff members working for the City of Paris were suspended in 2025 following sexual misconduct reports, while the Paris prosecutor’s office opened 15 investigations into sexual assaults in pre-schools involving children under the age of five.
Similar examples have regularly appeared in the local press across the country. In Morigny-Champigny, south of Paris, an after-school educator was charged on November 27 with sexually assaulting 10 children. In the southern city of Perpignan, an employee of a leisure center was suspended and placed in preventive detention in September, accused of sexual assault and indecent exposure involving four victims. In July, in Haute-Savoie, an after-school worker was also charged with sexually assaulting nine children aged between 4 and 10.
