For Dutch consumers and business platforms such as online retailers, insurers and other connected organisations, the deal marks a shift to a broader European platform for secure online identification.
From mid 2026, consumers will be able to use the itsme app alongside their bank app to identify themselves with iDIN. Full integration with itsme is scheduled for 2028.
Launched ten years ago by Dutch banks ING, Rabobank, ABN Amro and ASN Bank, iDIN is currently used across 300 connected websites, with 15 million identification actions recorded in 2024.
In Belgium, itsme functions not only as a digital ID for commercial services, similar to iDIN, but also for government websites, comparable to DigiD in the Netherlands. More than 80 percent of the adult population in Belgium use the app. The acquisition of iDIN marks itsme’s first major step outside Belgium.
Tom Van Den Bosch, CEO itsme: “With the acquisition of iDIN, we reinforce our position as the European standard for digital identity. iDIN is a trusted name in the Netherlands, and by joining forces we are preparing for the future with one solution that combines ease of use with the highest international standards. Our goal is clear: a strong and reliable digital identity for everyone, everywhere, at all times.”
