They already don’t. This has been the case for years. Journal turning out slop as usual.

Hasn’t this always been the case. I knew a lad who was basically stuck there because he was scared of getting caught when he left.

I’m as anti-ICE and Trump as you can get but surely illegal immigrants weren’t risking coming home for christmas prior to this year as well? I mean once you get there your highest chances of getting deported or fined are when you’re trying to cross over and back across the border surely

There are so many ways, legally, to come, work or study in the US as an Irish person. Are they too lazy to do paperwork or do they have a criminal record?

This is very confusing I always thought but the Irish in the States without papers were “undocumented” rather than illegal?

Who gives a shit?
Are we supposed to care about a bunch of criminals getting punished? Is it supposed to be surprised a solicitor is telling criminals to not flaunt their crime? XD

There was an amnesty in 2022, if they arrived before then and didn’t sort it out when the chance came around they’re real fools.

Well that’s a fucking dumb title.
How in your right mind could you think you could re-enter the states after coming home to Ireland. They will know you overstayed when you leave

I can’t say I’m particularly sympathetic to an illegal immigrant if they get deported.
There’s an exception there for if they were children and it was their parents’ fuckery that causes the problem, but if you’re a grown adult and you immigrate illegally to another country I couldn’t give a fuck if you get deported.

I know lots of people who overstayed visas in the U.S.
It was 100% understood you could not go back to Ireland if you chose to do that. People missed funerals let alone Christmas. Anyone at all familiar with emigration to America knows this.

The absolute irony of this is that yanks are now doing this in Europe and calling themselves digital nomads and skipping out to Albania or Serbia and even Ireland for 3 months to “reset” their status and back in again. This all sounds like a laugh until you realise they are eating our lunch while they do it
thatisnotmyknob on
This been the case since 9/11 when they started fingerprinting people on the way out. They compared that to your original visa paperwork and flagged you if you overstayed.
Im American with undocumented Irish family and I remember this being big news because people couldn’t go home for Christmas anymore.
This is a non-story probably just trying to grab a click.

My maternal great grandfather was an illegal immigrant to the USA from Ireland, something I never forgot when it came to discussions around illegal immigration in general. Interesting to see they’ve moved beyond brown people with their ICE gestapo. I’d say perhaps a new wave of anti Catholic rhetoric is almost upon us but JD Vance would have to change religions again if that were the case.

I don’t understand the resistance to this, apart from the standard issue “omg Trump” thing on reddit.
If you were in any other country illegally you wouldn’t expect no comeback eventually.

I lived in NYC for 10 years (grew up in Ireland, parents had me over there, so I have dual citizenship). In 2016 when trump started his rally I remember all of us laughing at the whole thing. He obviously got in that time, I had moved back home in July that year) and THE AMOUNT of Irish people I knew and considered friends (who were there illegally) became absolute maga mad. When I’ve called them out “yeah but they’ll never get rid of us Irish, we built America. We’re not criminals” I’m not even joking, they’re out with their red hats, American flags outside the houses and apartment. Sharing mental stuff about “leftie snowflakes”.

I’ve got a cousin over there illegally for almost 20 years now. I’ve not seen him since 2017 when I went to his city for a few days and I was absolutely mortified to hear how glowingly he spoke of Trump because he didn’t like Mexicans/Latinos. He’s comfortably the most ignorant of my 34 first cousins. He’s gone quiet on Facebook this year I’ve noticed.

But why is it surprising? It states _illegal_ immigrants, which is expected, not just in the US but everywhere. You can legally immigrate to anywhere, so what’s the point of illegally entering?
