Montenegro will have a strong political tailwind on its European path during the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the European Union, said Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

This was announced by the cabinet of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, who met with his Cypriot counterpart in Brussels, on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Summit.

The meeting, the statement emphasizes, was of exceptional importance, considering that Cyprus will take over the presidency of the European Council from Denmark on January 1, 2026.

Milatović asked the President of Cyprus for “strong support for Montenegro’s EU path.”

“Hristodoulidis stressed that he sees President Milatović as a reliable partner and friend, and that Montenegro can count on the continued support of Cyprus. He said that Montenegro will have a strong political tailwind on its European path during the Cypriot presidency of the Council,” the statement reads.

Milatović asked the Cypriot President to close as many chapters as possible in the first half of next year by organizing more intergovernmental conferences during their presidency of the Council.

At the same time, he asked Christodoulides to form a working group to draft the Accession Treaty.

“As part of his intensive diplomatic activities, President Milatović will continue to open doors and strengthen political support for Montenegro in the EU, in order to ensure a faster negotiation pace and achieve concrete, measurable results on Montenegro’s European path as soon as possible,” the statement reads.
