“By 2028, the cross-border railway tunnel between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia should be ready,” said Deputy Prime Minister and outgoing Bulgarian Minister of Transport and Communications, Grozdan Karadzov, today.

He participated in a meeting of the Bulgarian Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy, which unanimously supported the ratification of the Agreement between the governments of the two countries on the preparation, construction and operation of a cross-border railway tunnel, signed on November 6, 2025 in the village of Gjueshevo.

“This is a project that is being monitored very closely by the European Commission and any country that from now on shows unreasonable obstacles to this project will be considered an unreliable partner. This is a test for us, although we are an EU member, but an even bigger test for the Republic of North Macedonia, which is a candidate for EU membership,” Karadzov said, according to Bulgarian media.

The outgoing minister also emphasized that “this is a joint project, not a little excavation by both sides, but a whole joint project.”

The tunnel will be managed permanently by such a joint committee. Both parties will always have to pay a certain amount for its maintenance, but it will be maintained jointly. /Telegraph/
