Dzianis Kuchynski, diplomatic adviser to Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsykhanouskaya, says this is an important day for everyone and he is pleased seeing Belarusian heroes free.
He thanked the United States, US President Donald Trump and his administration, and especially the European Union, including Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania, for all the assistance.
After the release by the regime, the Belarusian political prisoners were first taken to Ukraine and only then travelled to Lithuania.
They were greeted by representatives of the Belarusian Democratic Office who reside in Lithuania, including opposition figure Siarhei Tsikhanousky.
They were met with applause and chants “Long live Belarus”.
Mr Kuchynski added that before speaking to the press the freed political prisoners would be given shelter, food and medical aid.
He expressed his belief that Lithuania would help as agreed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Migration Department as Lithuania is ready to give them a safe haven.
He says there are still around 1,650 political prisoners in Belarus and the opposition hopes to free them all.
As reported previously, after reaching an agreement with President Trump, Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 123 prisoners from various countries in return for the US lifting sanctions on potash fertilisers. There were two Lithuanians among them.
