The interim government on Thursday approved a proposal to establish a Bangladesh embassy in Bern of Switzerland.
The approval was given at a meeting of the council of advisers, held with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the chair at his office at Tejgaon in the capital Dhaka, according to information shared by the chief adviser’s press wing.
Since independence, Bangladesh has maintained in Geneva of Switzerland a permanent mission which handles both United Nations-related work and bilateral embassy functions due to the absence of a resident embassy in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.
Considering Switzerland’s role as an important development partner and strategic ally of Bangladesh, the council decided to open an embassy in Bern, said the press wing.
Initially, the embassy will begin operations with the appointment of an ambassador, a first secretary and a limited number of officials and staff, it added.
Bangladesh currently operates 82 mission offices, including embassies, across the world.
