Slovenia orders ninety-eight million euros passenger fleet: siemens and magyar vagon to supply new rolling stock for cross-border services

Slovenia’s national railway operator, Slovenian Railways (SŽ), has secured a €98 million agreement to expand its passenger fleet, a significant investment that aims to enhance the country’s domestic and cross-border rail services. Signed on December 15, the deal includes the procurement of four high-speed electric locomotives from Siemens and 20 passenger coaches from Hungarian manufacturer Magyar Vagon. This initiative will improve SŽ’s capabilities and competitiveness in international transport, aligning with Slovenia’s strategic goal to become a key transfer point in European rail networks.

Locomotive Supply by Siemens

As part of the deal, Siemens will deliver four Vectron 200 km/h electric locomotives, valued at €26 million. These locomotives will be equipped with the latest European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3, ensuring they meet the necessary standards for cross-border operation. Once delivered, the locomotives will be authorized to operate not only within Slovenia but also in Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Italy. The Vectron locomotives will enable SŽ to operate high-speed services across multiple countries, enhancing connectivity and efficiency in cross-border travel.

Coaches to be Built by Magyar Vagon

Hungarian manufacturer Magyar Vagon has secured a €72 million contract to build 20 passenger coaches. These coaches will be designed for high-speed operation, with a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The coaches will be organized into five four-car trains, each consisting of three AB cars—offering both first and second class seating—and one Combo car. The Combo car will feature a buffet section, first-class seating, and dedicated space for bicycles, providing a comprehensive and comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Magyar Vagon’s coaches will also be compatible for use across the seven countries in which the Vectron locomotives can operate. This broad operational scope underscores the importance of international compatibility in improving the efficiency and reach of Slovenia’s rail network. Additionally, the deal includes a two-year warranty period and a commitment to maintaining a 95% fleet availability rate in the first two years after delivery, ensuring the reliability of the new fleet.

Enhanced Services and Future Goals

The new fleet will primarily serve both domestic and cross-border inter-city routes, providing faster and more efficient services for passengers traveling across the region. With the expected delivery dates for the new equipment set for 2027 and 2028—Vectrons will arrive in April and May 2027, while the new coaches are scheduled to be delivered between June and October 2028—Slovenian Railways is positioning itself to offer competitive and timely services in the international rail market.

Miha Butara, Director of SŽ Passenger, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment: “We have clear goals: to become the main transfer point in international transport between southeastern Europe and western and northern Europe. With the new rolling stock, we will be even more competitive in international transport, and in the coming years we are also planning to invest in 45 new trains.”

Investment in Rail Infrastructure

This investment is part of Slovenia’s broader strategy to modernize and expand its railway infrastructure. The purchase of new locomotives and coaches represents a vital step in improving passenger services, increasing the frequency of trains, and facilitating smoother connections with neighboring countries. By enhancing its rolling stock, Slovenia aims to further integrate into the European rail network, positioning itself as a central hub for both regional and international rail transport.

Furthermore, the decision to finance €43 million of the €98 million total cost through Slovenia’s Climate Change Fund reflects a commitment to environmentally sustainable transport options. The use of electric locomotives and the focus on high-speed, energy-efficient travel will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting green transport initiatives across the region.

Looking Ahead

Slovenian Railways’ new fleet will provide a major boost to both domestic and international rail services, making Slovenia a key player in Europe’s interconnected rail network. With an eye on future growth, SŽ plans to continue expanding its fleet with an additional 45 new trains in the coming years, ensuring that the country remains competitive and capable of meeting the demands of modern rail travel. As the new rolling stock enters service, passengers can look forward to faster, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly travel across Slovenia and beyond.

In conclusion, Slovenia’s €98 million fleet investment is a pivotal development for the country’s rail industry. With Siemens’ advanced locomotives and Magyar Vagon’s innovative coaches, Slovenian Railways is well-positioned to deliver high-speed, cross-border services that will drive regional connectivity and boost the country’s transportation infrastructure in the years to come.
