French officials and state-owned nuclear utility EDF are pushing forward with plans to construct six new 1.65 gigawatt EPR2 reactors while mulling the possibility of building a further eight. The first of the six EPR2s is targeted for commissioning by 2038, which means that building the newbuild fleet would be an enormous bet on long-term power demand in France — and possibly in the broader EU. The size of that bet only keeps growing with the continued stagnation in French electricity demand, as current power generation outpaces domestic consumption by an increasingly wide margin.
