I am sorry if this is a silly or obvious question!

  1. It means that you are not allowed to block those doors using your luggage. You have to leave the door completely unobstructed as it is an emergency escape route.

  2. No, of course NOT!!! It only means, don’t place your luggage directly in front of that door, because that’s the door through which the driver might have to leave.

  3. Besides what everyone already said about the door being blocked, the same applies for obvious reasons to the corridor too, as it is an escape route too.

  4. Thank you all very much for explaining! It’s my first time traveling in Germany and I’m very nervous of looking like an idiot haha

  5. Slightly unrelated, but no other country in Europe has the same degree of ‘entitlement’ that the Germans have to keep the seat alongside them exclusively for their rucksack. Not a ‘biggie’ some might contest, but it does have a ripple effect in that those who are not bold enough to tell a fellow passenger to put their bag on the floor to let them in, means a greater than nesseesarily number people are standing in the area for bikes/buggies.

The DB staff should be erecting signage and/or some kind of fine to reduce this idiocy.

Where I come from, if you see a fellow passenger approaching and if your bag is taking a space it hasn’t paid for, you move it out of the way preemptively.

I’m pretty straight with these folk and am not afraid to put up with an hour of silent hostility from a passenger who I annoyed if it means a safe place to sit.

  6. Kind of yes, there is a door that needs to be free at all times. So on your lap you of course dou can still have whatever, but there is no space for suitcases.

Thanks for asking this! I always assumed it meant no luggage in first class, but obviously I’m an idiot 😅

Is it the RE Salzburg<->Munich? If so, be aware that both the area in front and behind the door is part of 1st class. I’ve often seen tourist getting kicked out/fined there
