Two major sport facilities, one in the capital and the other in the east of the country, are due to open in 2029.
Luxembourg City
The €110 million Luxembourg-Hamm athletics stadium and sports centre will be able “to host world-class sports events,” Luxembourg City Council said in a statement on Friday.
It will have “an eight-lane, World Athletics 400 Metre Standard Track-compliant athletics track” with seating for up to 1,400 spectators, a 5,511 m² sports hall and anti-doping control room, and a 1.8-hectare, landscaped public park, among other features.
The site is located on a field near St George’s International School in Hamm and not far from the National Sports Institute’s complex in Cents.
Construction is expected to start in November 2026 and is planned to be completed in April 2029. That would make the facility available for the Games of the Small States of Europe, which Luxembourg will host in June 2029.
Mertert
In eastern Luxembourg, the €48 million Mertert sports centre will be built on the site of a primary school, which will be demolished next year.
The main hall will be able to accommodate basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton, among other sports, as well as school and club matches, officials have said. Stands will accommodate up to 400 spectators, while outdoor sporting facilities are also planned.
The building is set for completion in the summer of 2029.
