Nordic discount retailer Tokmanni Group is extending its new science-based climate targets to all of its current operations across Finland, Sweden and Denmark.
These near-term targets, approved in November 2025 and extending to 2030, are aligned with the latest climate science and the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially validated Tokmanni Group’s commitment, which encompasses both emissions from its own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) and crucial indirect emissions from its value chain (Scope 3).
Leading By Example
Tokmanni Group has pledged to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% by 2030, using a 2024 baseline.
The group plans to address emissions from heat and electricity consumption by various energy-efficiency measures, a transition to fossil-free electricity, and an increased reliance on renewable energy sources.
It managed to surpass its previous science-based target of a 70% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions for its Finnish operations by 2025 (from a 2015 base year).
By the end of 2024, a 71.5% reduction was achieved, driven by energy-efficiency improvements, increased renewable heat usage, and the adoption of fossil-free electricity, with guarantees of origin.
Supply Chain Engagement
Recognising that the majority of its emissions occur within the life cycle of the products it sells, Tokmanni Group is placing a strong emphasis on supplier engagement.
The new climate targets commit to ensuring that 80.0% of its suppliers (by spend, covering purchased goods, services, and upstream transportation and distribution) will have implemented their own science-based targets by 2030.
The previous supplier engagement target for Finnish operations saw 47.6% of suppliers adopting science-based targets by the end of 2024.
The recent establishment of a unified sourcing-and-buying organisation is expected to facilitate more effective engagement and alignment across the entire supply chain.
Kaisa Mattson, group head of sustainability at Tokmanni Group, explained by saying, “Companies have a significant opportunity and responsibility to combat global warming.”
Mattson later added, “It is natural that our new science-based targets, set at the end of 2025, now cover the group’s operations in all countries where it has stores.”
