A man drove his car into a bus stop in Giessen in western Germany on Monday, injuring three people, one of them seriously, police said.

According to initial investigations, the 32-year-old man from Azerbaijan who lives in Giessen had previously crashed his car into two vehicles at a traffic light. He continued driving and then crashed into the bus stop.

The man then drove on and later stopped his car. He was detained by the police.

“The exact circumstances of the incident are currently unknown and are the subject of the investigation,” a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson declined to comment on whether investigators believe the incident was an accident or deliberate behaviour on the part of the driver.

The police have cordoned off the area.
