A historic mosque has completely burned down in the Tsxmorisi village of Keda district in Georgia’s Autonomous Republic of Adjara, APA’s local bureau reports.
The incident occurred in the evening hours of December 22.
The Mufti of Western Georgia, Adam Shantadze, visited the village yesterday and promised residents that the mosque would be restored in the near future.
The Tsxmorisi village mosque had held the status of a cultural heritage monument of Adjara since 2006. Its first floor was made of dressed stone, while the second floor was wooden.
According to historical sources, the mosque was built in 1892–1893, was closed during the Soviet period, and did not operate.
It should be noted that the Tsxmorisi village mosque is the second historic mosque to burn down in Adjara this year. In March, the mosque located in the Satsikhira village of the Khulo district was destroyed by fire.
