Shannon Airport has unveiled Ireland’s first airfield-based solar PV farm.

This is part of a €6.6 million investment in sustainability and passenger facilities.

The 1.2-megawatt installation is expected to power up to 20% of the airport’s electricity needs, with trials already exceeding expectations.

Minister for Climate and Transport Darragh O’Brien officially opened the solar farm and a major extension to the airport’s European boarding gates.

The new gate area adds over 7,800 square feet of space and covered walkways, improving passenger flow and access to short-haul services.

The projects form part of a wider €50 million upgrade programme as Shannon Airport pushes toward major decarbonisation targets for 2030 and 2050.
