The Netherlands is procuring more CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), Dutch State Secretary for Defence Gijs Tuinman told parliament on 19 December. The procurement is being conducted through the Swedish-led CV90 MkIV Nordic initiative in which Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Norway also participate.
The six countries signed a technical agreement in November defining the programme-specific principles of co-operation, technical requirements, and an agreed action plan until the signing of the main contract, which is planned for early 2026.
CV90 deliveries to participants are planned for 2028. The Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a press release on 19 November that joint procurement of the CV90 has advantages in terms of cost and interoperability, with Sweden negotiating the contract with BAE Systems.
The MoD noted that the Royal Netherlands Army’s (RNLA’s) CV90s are undergoing a mid-life upgrade (MLU), including installation of the Iron Fist-Light Decoupled (IF-LD) active protection system (APS), part of which is taking place in the Netherlands and involving over 20 local companies. In January 2021, the Dutch Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), since renamed the Materiel and IT Command (Commando Materieel en IT: COMMIT), awarded BAE Systems Hägglunds a USD500 million contract for 122 upgraded vehicles scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026.
Dutch CV90 MkIVs will equip an extra armoured infantry battalion of the RNLA’s 13 Light Brigade. The new unit will be based at the Nassau Dietz casern in Budel.
