Kosovo has signed a contract to purchase artillery-mounted High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HUMVEES) from Indiana-based military vehicle giant AM General.
The order incorporates the Hawkeye 105-millimeter soft recoil mobile howitzer, which can be attached and disarmed from the vehicle within 90 seconds.
The weapon, based on the M20 cannon, features 360-degree coverage, a firing rate of 8 rounds per minute, and a maximum range of 20 kilometers (12 miles), depending on munitions used.
Alongside spare parts, sustainment services, and associated training, AM General will deliver medical emergency vehicles, command and control trucks, and other types of platforms that will support the artillery fleet’s operability and lethality.
The Kosovo Security Force, the Balkan country’s national military, is expected to begin receiving the package between 2026 and 2027.
“With this acquisition, our military is moving into another phase of development, increasing direct-fire power for long-range shooting,” Kosovo Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci stated.
“This acquisition marks a significant step in strengthening our defense capabilities and building a modern, capable, ready and interactive army with our strategic allies, ensuring greater country security and long-term stability in the region.”
First HUMVEE Hawkeye Sale
AM General said the contract marks the first sale of the HUMVEE Hawkeye since its inception.
The system’s testbed was introduced in 2016 and adopted for simulated drills five years later. The platform made its combat debut with the Ukrainian Armed Forces for frontline assessments in 2024.
In October 2025, AM General officially launched the vehicle, complete with a lighter and more flexible powertrain and design.
“This system embodies durability, versatility, and advanced technology, ensuring that Kosovo’s armed forces are equipped with the best tools to protect and serve,” said John Chadbourne, executive vice president of business development at AM General.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with defense entities worldwide, delivering vehicles that enhance operational effectiveness and safety.”
