A head-on collision between two cars near Zielęcice in south-western Poland has claimed the lives of six people, police said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at an intersection of two major roads near the village, a police spokesman was quoted as saying by Polish news agency PAP.

Five people died in one of the cars when it caught fire after the collision, a spokesman for the fire brigade said. The driver of the other car was also killed.

According to the emergency services, all the vehicle occupants died at the scene. Their identities have yet to be established.

Polish authorities urged drivers to exercise caution on account of icy conditions as temperatures dropped below 0 degrees Celsius, with roads expected to be busy due to Christmas holiday traffic.
