Probably a good idea in the circumstances. The US has clearly indicated it cannot be relied on to keep treaty commitments, but is prepared to sell out allies for short term billionaire gains.

The headline seems likely to be nonsense. Japan will spend approximately $56 billion which is behind 9 other countries – US, China, Russia, Germany, India, UK, Saudia Arabia, Ukraine and France. Even if Japan increased their budget by 50%, it would still be lower than the top 7 spending of those countires.

The simple answer is: it cannot be achieved because Japan’s economy simply cannot support such policies. Even now, the Takaichi regime is completely unable to solve the economic problems, no matter how many slogans she shouts, they are just empty promises.

Feels like the main reason America wants the world to destabilize is because it benefits much from other nation’s defense spending.
Various economies in the world aren’t doing too hot and are running austere measures – yet it is not uncommon to hear about heightened defense spending when the money could have kept additional social programs afloat.
