HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Meta, the company that owns social media platforms Instagram and Facebook, has ramped up security efforts this year.

More than 635,000 accounts on Instagram and Facebook were taken down after Meta said its artificial intelligence system detected violations of its policies on child exploitation, abuse and nudity.

But some business owners, like 23-year-old Kailia Lopez, said Meta’s security system was incorrect.

Lopez owns an online bikini store, Kailia’s Kinis, which used Instagram as its main source of business. Her account had amassed more than 35,000 followers, and she took and fulfilled orders through her page.

But Meta took it down after saying her account violated its policies.

Lopez said that never happened, and the ban on her account is hampering her business just as she ordered a new collection for her online store.

Lopez’s products are made of all-natural, recycled materials for the bikinis, and she’s hopeful she can begin to connect with her customers through her Instagram page again soon.
