5 mm high threshold and 100 trips to work by bike.

I like cycling. It’s so simple and at the same time answers the question of why I cycle to work in the first place. It’s been 11 days since the last ride in 2025 and those were round 100. Not even the most if I mention Špela from Kamnik, who overcame 127 journeys to work this year.

My body has already healed, but I still feel the pressure in my chest when I think about putting on cycling leggings again. I mentioned my love for cycling, but in the last quarter I felt pressure to hit a round number. All this voluntarily, just because of this number.

“Did you only work a hundred times this year?”, my uncle asked me. He made me laugh and I understood his sarcasm. He knows that I work at the University Clinical Center and he must have been in a hurry to make a comment about public administration, something along the lines of, “Sure, you can cycle to work when you’re not doing anything”. But we are working. There is no shortage of work in the intensive care unit, and neither is my energy. It was cycled into morning, afternoon, night and all-day shifts. They cycled in winter cold, spring wind, July heat and wet autumn leaves. There are 24 km between my home and work. It’s going fast route thus: Kamnik – Mengeško polje – Mengeš Loka – IC Trzin – Tomačevo – Žale – UKC.

Why did I write this post? Because I think the story is worth sharing with you. Because I have not been part of the crowd on the market ring road a hundred times. Because it’s damn hard to cross the threshold at home and get on the bike at 4:50 in the morning and -3 degrees.

However, believe that the real achievement is not 100 rides, but 100 steps over the 5mm high threshold at home.
