Usually, it is the multiethnic countries that struggle with separatist movements. But Somalia is a special case, despite having one dominant ethnicity, it can’t hold itself together.

Somaliland is just the former British colonized somalia. if french somalia (djibouti) and italian somalia (normal somalia) free, then why not the british one?

One important tidbit to remember when looking at maps like these. A lot of warlords earn money by controlling roads and charging toll fees. So that is why cities seem to be controlled by a government that (generally) collects taxes, and why large swathes of nothing are controlled by jihadists who (generally) charge tolls.
