I really hope they are building a bunch of renewable energy to support these.

Yay higher electricity bills next year again. Looks like I’ll be skipping dinner more often

Great news.

FB wanted to add solar and wind turbines to their existing DC. They were refused planning permission. ’cause ye know, if they generate some of their own energy, then they don’t pay the crooks.

Ah that’s why we’re getting increase in our bills to help build infrastructure.
I don’t understand what benefits this brings to Ireland.
We are already paying increased electricity prices to pay for grid upgrades. This is only going to place more demand on a system that’s already under stress.
And I don’t think these provide a meaningful number of jobs. Am I missing something?

Just as well the ESB are raising prices for us to cover the network upgrades

What’s the economic benefit of these? Some more corporation tax? But higher energy bills? A few jobs?

I wonder how long it would take to get planning permission for an apartment block of similar size

We need out builders and engineers working on necessary infrastructure, water, power, transport and housing.
Not hotels. Not office blocks. Not data centres.
Where’s my pen?

How about they pay enough to offset the increase in fees to the general public?

This shit brings my fucking piss to a boil. This offsets the already meagre inroads we’ve made into renewable energy as a country. Instead of our renewables powering cheaper heating for old people or schools, or any number of social goods, they will be swallowed into Amazon’s power black hole. We’re all suffering with heating bills this winter, as we have been for the last decade, and our electrical infrastrucure is offered up to Amazon on a platter.
I wrote to my local councillors earlier this year imploring that they support a motion for a complete moratorium on data center construction, but Helen Farrell of South Dublin county council put forward an amendment ensuring that data centers can still be constructed, so long as they’re powered by renewables. This train wreck of corporate waste and hubris was directly enabled by her and those who accepted her motion.

We badly need to build nuclear power plants. Anyone who is against nuclear power is either brainwashed by big oil’s propaganda or stupid.
It’s the only logical solution all the renewables in the world won’t make a dent when we have companies like facebook and amazon here.

Every single person complaining about this in this thread. Do you plan on protesting or just whinging on the Internet?

Hey let’s all complain about another data centre for AWS, on Reddit.

We are heading towards climate catastrophe and we are pissing energy up the wall with data centres that will be used to generate videos of cats walking on two legs or babies talking in AI slop. It would be wonderful if anyone in a leadership position could lead.
It is like having firemen rush in to your burning house to spread petrol around.
We should be producing less, consuming less. Data centres should be getting taken down instead we are accellerating as we approach the cliff.
