On 28 December 2025, the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch Relay will pass through an area where the rich history of Irpinia meets the landscapes of Vulture, gradually leading the Flame towards the heart of Basilicata. This stage alternates between hills, plateaus, and historic centres, building a narrative that weaves together memory, community, and nature.
The day’s programme
The day will begin in Avellino, a city deeply rooted in its land and traditions. Walking through the centre will take you along tree-lined avenues and past buildings that tell the story of an urban history built on resilience and a deep connection to the land.
The route will continue towards Melfi, where the imposing presence of Monte Vulture defines a landscape that still retains elements of its volcanic origin. The castle and the historic architecture of the centre will accompany the Fiamma along a stretch where nature and history coexist in a particularly harmonious way. From here, the relay will continue to Rionero in Vulture, a community deeply rooted in local agricultural traditions, and then to Venosa, the birthplace of the Latin poet Horace, where layers of Roman and medieval history contribute to a distinctive and authentic urban fabric.
Throughout the day, you will pass through landscapes that reflect the diversity of the Lucanian region: areas reminiscent of Castel Lagopesole, with its commanding position overlooking the valley; or the rural landscapes around Pietragalla, characterised by the presence of “palmenti” – ancient rock-cut chambers that preserve the rural knowledge rooted in the region’s deepest history. These hints will subtly enter the narrative, giving the stage a broad and coherent scope.
The stage will conclude in Potenza, a city situated over eight hundred metres above sea level, renowned for its historic centre with winding alleys, panoramic views, and notable civil architecture. Passing through the city centre, the Flame will arrive at Piazza Mario Pagano, where a city celebration will bring the community together around the brazier in a symbolic moment that unites the region, participation, and the Olympic spirit.
