All this amazing tech coming out of NASA in the recent years makes me wonder what kind of sci fi world we would be living in if the 1960s “Space Race” never ended!

NASA spending and tech

  1. on the one hand the space race is starting back up with the allure of space mining and nuclear power plants on the moon, on the other hand the potus has neutered nasa… i cant wait to see what other countries get up to

  2. If the space race never ended, we likely would be in the exact same place but Soviets would have collapsed earlier.

The ‘Space Race’ is romanticised, but was setup in the backdrop of a very scary and costly cold war. For the Space race to continue forever alot of millitaristic attitudes would have had to persist both in the US and USSR, as well as a form of showmanship.

These characteristics don’t lend to peaceful relations between nations, while the Space Race was nice it was also a front for both countries to display scientific prowess in Rocketry. Which should clearly be linked to their Nuclear distribution capabilities, even if Space flight systems are more broadly applicable than millitary systems.

  3. Too bad NASA has been gutted, eh? Anecdotally have friends in contracting roles working with NASA that have been seeing layoffs in 2025. Same thing happened with most non-private research institutions in this country. If you call yourself a NASA fan, you can’t support this administration… Simple as.

I’m not sure the “space race” ever ended. I think it’s more likely the government quit making advancements public and demonstrating tech after the goal to collapse the Soviet Union was accomplished.

  5. You should watch “For all Mankind” on Apple+ , it’s about the depiction of an ‘alternate history’ of the global space race after the USSR succeeds in achieving the first manned Moon landing. You won’t be disappointed .

  6. Okay, the “Quesst” X-59 looks way too much like Dr. Benton Quest’s jet, they had to know what they were naming it after.

    Mad respect.
